EdTech Usability: A Heuristic Evaluation for a Better User Experience

A polished interface can still be frustrating to use.

That was the main idea behind this usability review of Tutoruu, an EdTech platform I evaluated using Jakob Nielsen’s 10 Usability Heuristics. Instead of looking only at how the website looked, I wanted to understand where the experience created friction, where users might hesitate or get confused, and which small design decisions could make the product feel clearer and easier to use.

A heuristic evaluation is useful because it gives designers a structured way to inspect an interface before running broader usability testing. It does not replace real user research, but it can reveal obvious usability issues early and help teams decide where to focus their attention.

For this evaluation, I reviewed Tutoruu across Nielsen’s ten heuristics, documented the issues I found, assigned a severity level, and suggested practical improvements.

1. Visibility of System Status

One of the first things I noticed was that the interface did not always communicate what was happening clearly enough. Some pages, such as About Us and Business, lacked strong descriptive headings, which can make it harder for users to immediately understand where they are.

The experience also offered limited visual feedback after some interactions. When users select navigation elements or interact with buttons, there is not always a noticeable state change confirming that the action has been registered.

These may sound like small details, but feedback is one of the ways an interface maintains a conversation with the user. When the system responds clearly, users feel more confident that their actions worked. When it stays visually unchanged, even for a second, hesitation starts to appear.

Severity: 2/5 : Minor usability issue.

The improvement here is relatively straightforward: use consistent, descriptive page titles and introduce clearer visual states for selected or interactive elements. Active navigation items, hover states, loading indicators, and subtle confirmation feedback can all help the product communicate what is happening without forcing users to guess.

2. Match Between the System and the Real World

A product can use technically correct language and still feel difficult to understand.

In Tutoruu, some icons did not communicate their purpose clearly enough, and parts of the interface relied on language that could feel too technical for non-expert users. This becomes especially important in an education product, where the audience may include people with very different levels of digital confidence.

The goal is not to oversimplify everything. It is to make sure the interface speaks the user’s language rather than the internal language of the product team.

Severity: 3/5 : Major usability issue.

Ambiguous icons should be replaced with more familiar symbols or supported with labels when the meaning is not immediately obvious. The copy should also be reviewed for unnecessary jargon and rewritten in a more conversational, user-friendly way.

If users need to stop and decode the interface before they can use it, the product is making them do work that the design should be doing for them.

3. User Control and Freedom

Users make mistakes. They change their minds. Good interfaces expect that.

One issue I found was the lack of an Undo option for actions such as deleting chats. When an action is destructive and irreversible, even a small accidental click can create unnecessary frustration.

There was also limited feedback after some meaningful actions, such as completing registration. Successful completion is not only a system state; it is a moment where the product should reassure the user that they have reached the intended outcome.

Adding Undo for reversible destructive actions would give users more confidence when interacting with the product. Important milestones, such as successful sign-up, should also be followed by clear confirmation through a message, state change, or lightweight celebratory feedback.

The point is not to celebrate every click. It is to make sure the user always knows when something important has happened and has a way back when a mistake is recoverable.

4. Consistency and Standards

Consistency reduces the amount of learning users have to do.

Some icons in Tutoruu appeared without labels, which can make their meaning dependent on interpretation. An icon that feels obvious to the design team may not be obvious to someone seeing it for the first time.

Severity: 1/5 : Low-priority issue.

Where an icon is not universally understood, adding a label or tooltip can remove unnecessary ambiguity. Similar actions should also follow the same visual and interaction patterns throughout the product.

The user should not have to relearn the interface from one section to another.

5. Error Prevention and Recovery

Error states are one of the clearest tests of whether a product is actually helping the user.

Some error messages in Tutoruu were too brief to explain what had gone wrong or what the user should do next. Form errors were also not always visually highlighted strongly enough, which can make users scan the page trying to find the problem.

A message that simply tells someone that something failed is technically feedback, but it is not very useful feedback.

Error messages should explain the problem in plain language and, whenever possible, tell the user how to recover. Form fields with errors should be visually identifiable using clear indicators such as borders, icons, or inline messages close to the affected field.

A good error message does not just say “something went wrong.” It helps the user understand what happened and what to do next.

6. Flexibility and Efficiency of Use

The current experience works primarily around the standard interaction flow, but it offers limited support for more experienced or frequent users.

For example, there are no clear keyboard shortcuts or customization options that could help power users move through repeated tasks faster.

Severity: 0/5 : Not a critical usability problem.

This is not an urgent issue, especially if the majority of users do not need advanced controls. However, as the platform grows, shortcuts or customizable behaviors could make repetitive tasks more efficient for frequent users.

The important point is to introduce these features because there is a real usage need, not simply because advanced functionality sounds impressive.

7. Aesthetic and Minimalist Design

Minimalism is not about making everything empty. It is about giving the right information the right amount of visual attention.

In parts of Tutoruu, some icons had low contrast against their backgrounds, making them harder to notice. Other areas used large amounts of white space in ways that made the composition feel visually unbalanced rather than intentionally spacious.

Severity: 1/5 : Cosmetic issue.

Improving contrast would make important interface elements easier to recognize, while a more deliberate approach to spacing could create a better balance between readability and content density.

White space is valuable when it improves hierarchy. When it separates related information too aggressively or makes the layout feel disconnected, it starts working against the experience.

8. Help Users Recognize, Diagnose, and Recover From Errors

There is a difference between telling users that an error happened and helping them recover from it.

Some of Tutoruu’s error states did not provide enough context or actionable guidance. A failed payment, for example, is already a stressful moment. If the system gives users only a generic failure message, it leaves them with another problem: figuring out what to do next.

Severity: 3/5 : Major usability issue.

Error messages should clearly describe what happened and provide the next available action whenever possible. If the problem is related to payment, input, connectivity, or another recoverable issue, the interface should guide users toward a specific next step instead of leaving them at a dead end.

Recovery is part of the experience, not an exception to it.

9. Recognition Rather Than Recall

Users should not have to remember how the interface worked on another page.

I noticed inconsistencies in the sizing and colors of some design elements. Individually, these differences may look cosmetic, but repeated inconsistency increases the amount of attention users need to spend understanding what each element means.

Severity: 1/5 : Cosmetic issue.

Standardizing icon sizes, colors, and recurring interface patterns can make the product easier to scan and understand. The more consistently information is presented, the less users need to rely on memory.

A design system is valuable here not because every screen should look identical, but because repeated meanings should be expressed in repeated ways.

10. Help and Documentation

Ideally, a product should be understandable without documentation. Real products, however, still need help in moments where users get stuck.

Tutoruu did not make support or contextual guidance consistently visible across the experience. This can become a problem when users face unfamiliar features or need reassurance before completing an important task.

Severity: 2/5 : Minor usability issue.

Help should be easy to find without taking over the interface. A visible help entry point, an FAQ, and contextual guidance around complex areas can give users support when they need it.

The goal is not to explain the entire product. It is to make sure users are not left alone at the exact moment they need clarification.

What This Evaluation Revealed

Looking at the ten heuristics together, the biggest opportunities were not about rebuilding the product from scratch. Most of them were about making the existing experience communicate more clearly.

Better feedback would reduce uncertainty. Clearer language and icons would reduce interpretation. Stronger error states would improve recovery. More consistent patterns would make the interface easier to learn.

That is one of the reasons heuristic evaluation is useful: it can reveal how many usability problems come from relatively small moments of friction rather than one dramatic design failure.

At the same time, this kind of evaluation has limits. These findings come from inspecting the interface against usability principles, not from observing real Tutoruu users completing tasks. The next step should be to validate the most important issues through usability testing and behavioral data, especially the findings with higher severity.

A Practical Heuristic Evaluation Checklist

When running your own heuristic evaluation, I usually find it more useful to treat the heuristics as questions rather than rules.

For Visibility of System Status, ask whether every page has a clear title, whether selected elements provide visual feedback, and whether loading, success, and completion states are communicated clearly.

For Match Between the System and the Real World, review whether the icons feel intuitive and whether the product speaks in language users can understand without technical knowledge.

For User Control and Freedom, check whether users can reverse important actions and whether the system gives clear feedback after meaningful steps.

For Consistency and Standards, look for repeated elements that behave differently, unlabeled icons, or patterns that conflict with common conventions without a clear reason.

For Error Prevention and Recovery, ask whether the product prevents predictable mistakes, highlights errors clearly, and explains how to fix them.

For Flexibility and Efficiency of Use, consider whether frequent users could complete repeated tasks faster through shortcuts or customization.

For Aesthetic and Minimalist Design, inspect contrast, hierarchy, spacing, and whether every element earns the attention it takes from the user.

For Help Users Recognize, Diagnose, and Recover From Errors, check whether error messages explain both the problem and the next step.

For Recognition Rather Than Recall, make sure recurring information and actions are visible and consistent enough that users do not need to remember details from previous screens.

And finally, for Help and Documentation, ask whether support is easy to find and whether contextual help appears where users are most likely to need it.

Final Thoughts

A heuristic evaluation is not about proving that an interface is good or bad. It is a way to slow down, inspect the experience deliberately, and ask where the product is making users think harder than they need to.

In Tutoruu’s case, the most meaningful improvements are not flashy features. They are clearer feedback, better error recovery, more predictable patterns, stronger language, and better communication between the system and the person using it.

That is usually where usability improves: not when we add more to the interface, but when we remove uncertainty from the experience.
